The Best laid plans
Let’s chat real quick about the best laid plans…. Ever have one of those days where you expected things to go one way and they just…didn’t? Whether it was timing or expectations, the day turned out to be something you didn’t expect and didn’t enjoy either.
It happens all of the time. To all of us.
It doesn’t have to necessarily be about time management. It could be a perfectly planned diet, when all of a sudden co-workers bring in treats you weren’t expecting or you accidentally left your lunch on top of your car when you were driving to work (uh, it’s happened — and I found my tupperware container in the alley when I came home, salad still intact).
Maybe you had plans to get up to work out, but then the dog kept you up, or your child got sick.
It’s not that these things occur and derail us. It’s how we respond to them.
So here are some tips, for any type of derailment.
- Deep breaths. The day doesn’t necessarily have to turn to $%#@, just because you’ve hit a speed bump.
- Make a plan for getting back on track, as soon as possible. Can you tighten up the dinner plans if lunch was more calories than expected? Can you squeeze in a few 10 minute walks if you missed boot camp in the morning?
- Remind yourself that out of unexpected things comes opportunity. Look for the opportunity and there’s less to be stressed about.
Sometimes we hold these expectations that really have no bearing on true accomplishment or happiness. By letting go, we can find the small triumphs that really make the day a success.
